Keynote: Creative collaborations; developing Knowledge Quarter Liverpool

In this session, Professor Anthony Hollander, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research and Impact, will talk to Colin Sinclair, CEO of Sciontec / Knowledge Quarter Liverpool, about the impact that development has had on bringing opportunities for research partnerships and collaborations to this city. They will also discuss how these opportunities have led to cutting edge research and share wisdom on how researchers can take advantage of these.

This will be followed by a refreshments for further networking and informal conversations.

Presenter information:

Colin Sinclair, CEO Sciontec/ KQ Liverpool

Colin is the CEO of Sciontec / Knowledge Quarter Liverpool, which is transforming half of Liverpool City Centre into a world-leading innovation district focused on health and education, science and technology. He started his career in the music industry, managing bands and owning nightclubs in Manchester, before moving on to produce major televised events internationally. Colin was CEO of Manchester’s investment and development agency (MIDAS) and, before taking up his role in KQ Liverpool, was a main board Director at the property developers Bruntwood, leading its diversification from office buildings into also owning science parks and developing creative workspace.

In 2018, Colin took up the dual role of CEO of Sciontec Developments Limited, a property development company that was created to bring new investment to Liverpool's science and tech assets, whilst creating a world-leading innovation ecosystem to help commercialise research and grow innovation-led companies. Sciontec owns the successful Liverpool Science Park and is developing HEMISPHERE, at Paddington Village, which is Liverpool City Council's flagship development site.

Professor Anthony Hollander, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Research and Impact, University of Liverpool

As Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research & Impact and Professor of Stem Cell Biology at the University of Liverpool, Prof Hollander provides strategic leadership for the development of research policy and for ensuring impact of the University’s research programmes in Liverpool and around the world. He is also responsible for commercialisation of research, for developing partnerships with companies and other external stakeholders and for the training of postgraduate research students.

His research career has focussed on the development of stem cell therapies for treating diseases of cartilage. His former University of Bristol spin-out company, Azellon Ltd, developed a stem cell treatment for torn knee cartilage and his new University of Liverpool spin-out company, TrophiCell, is developing trophic stem cell therapies for a range of chronic diseases. He was previously part of a team that created the world’s first tissue engineered airway and a former President of the International Cartilage Repair Society, Chair of Utrecht University’s International Scientific and Societal Advisory Board for Life Sciences and Chair of the Russell Group Pro-Vice-Chancellor’s Research Network.

He is a member of the Thrive project Steering Group.
